Markets End Lower After Long Weekend as Pharma Hits Fresh Record High

Market Wrap
Indian benchmark indices closed lower on Monday as investors adopted a cautious stance following the extended weekend. The Nifty slipped around 0.45% to finish just above the 23,950 level after selling pressure intensified through the session. Broader markets also remained under pressure as participants reduced risk exposure ahead of key global economic events. The pharmaceutical sector stood out as the market's strongest performer, with the Nifty Pharma index climbing to a fresh all-time high on sustained buying in heavyweight stocks. Global sentiment remained mixed, with Hong Kong's Hang Seng outperforming while most Asian and European markets traded in a narrow range as investors awaited fresh macroeconomic cues. Market participants also tracked developments in global trade negotiations, central bank policy expectations, crude oil prices, and currency movements, while domestic focus gradually shifted toward the upcoming first-quarter earnings season.
What's Ahead
Markets are expected to remain stock-specific in the coming sessions as investors await the start of the Q1 earnings season and management commentary on demand trends, margins, and business outlook. Globally, attention will remain on upcoming U.S. inflation and labour market data, progress in international trade negotiations, and signals on the Federal Reserve's policy trajectory. Strong corporate earnings and sustained foreign institutional investor inflows could support a market recovery, while any adverse global developments may keep volatility elevated in the near term.

Technical Outlook
NIFTY 50
The NIFTY 50 maintained its positive bias by closing above the psychologically important 24,100 mark, indicating that bulls continue to retain near-term control. The index remained resilient throughout the session, supported by strength in pharma, IT, auto, and select financial stocks, while the RSI holding above the 60 level reflects sustained bullish momentum. As long as the index remains above the immediate support zone of 23,839, the broader trend is likely to stay constructive, with any dips potentially attracting buying interest. On the upside, a decisive move above 24,367 could pave the way for a test of the next resistance near 24,530, while a break below support may trigger some profit booking.
BANK NIFTY
The NIFTY BANK extended its gains and continued to trade with a positive undertone, reflecting sustained buying interest across both private and public sector banks. The RSI hovering close to the 70 mark suggests that bullish momentum remains strong, although the index may witness intermittent consolidation after its recent upmove. Holding above the immediate support at 56,698 will be crucial for maintaining the prevailing uptrend. A sustained breakout above 59,055 could accelerate buying momentum toward 59,784, while a failure to hold support may result in short-term corrective pressure.
FINNIFTY
The NIFTY FINANCIAL SERVICES index continued to outperform, supported by broad-based participation across banks, NBFCs, insurers, and diversified financial stocks. The positive market breadth indicates healthy sector-wide strength, reinforcing the ongoing bullish structure. As long as the index sustains above the immediate support level of 26,089, the outlook remains favourable, with higher levels likely to be tested in the coming sessions. A breakout above 27,082 could strengthen the bullish momentum toward 27,389, while a breach of support may lead to temporary consolidation.
SENSEX
The BSE SENSEX maintained its upward momentum, supported by gains in heavyweight pharma, IT, banking, and energy stocks, reflecting continued institutional buying. The index continues to trade in a higher-high, higher-low formation, indicating that the broader trend remains positive despite selective profit booking in consumer-oriented stocks. Immediate support is placed at 76,109, which is expected to act as a key cushion during any short-term correction. On the upside, a sustained move above 78,079 could extend the rally toward 78,688, while any weakness below support may increase near-term volatility.
